About Dehesa de Sierra de Montánchez y Tamuja Natural Area

Dehesa de Sierra de Montánchez y Tamuja Natural Area is located in the autonomous community of Extremadura in southwestern Spain and encompasses a mosaic of open woodlands, pastures, and scrubland characteristic of the traditional dehesa landscape. The area is situated around the Sierra de Montánchez mountain range and near the Tamuja River valley, featuring gently rolling hills, cork oak and holm oak forests, and fertile meadows. This mix creates a vital habitat for a variety of wildlife, including the Iberian imperial eagle, black vulture, and wild boar, as well as traditional livestock such as Iberian pigs and Merino sheep, which benefit from the seasonal acorn harvest. Rich in cultural heritage, the region reflects centuries of sustainable land-use practices linked to the dehesa system—an agro-sylvo-pastoral model combining forestry, grazing, and agriculture that sustains both biodiversity and local livelihoods.

Visitors to the Natural Area can enjoy hiking and birdwatching, especially in spring and autumn when migratory birds pass through. The scenic trails offer views of rugged mountain ridges, tranquil riversides, and traditional farms. The small villages nearby provide authentic cultural encounters and local gastronomy focused on Iberian ham and regional cheeses. The protected status of the Natural Area supports continued conservation efforts to maintain the fragile balance between economic use and nature preservation, making it a prime example of Mediterranean landscape stewardship with appealing outdoor recreation opportunities and ecological significance.
